How do you teach toss outs?

If I have time in a series class, I like to teach lollies before toss outs. This helps provide the foundation of the rotational stretch. Toss outs can be challenging to teach. However, most students will be successful with lollies which helps give them confidence to begin toss outs. I slowly wean students off of lollies until they are just doing the entrance and exit of the move (the toss out). We then review the rotational stretch with an excercise just practicing the stretch. Then, I introduce some basic follow turning skills for follows including pacing and looking into the turn. Next, I fix issues with the catch including leaders running around the follow and making sure the catch is beginning on count 1. Finally, we smooth out the ending to make sure that leaders finish the rotation and are able to transition back to the basic or another move.
