Live Code of Conduct

Thank you to Cat’s Corner Studio in Montreal for help in creating this Code of Conduct.

Great Lakes Balboa Escape aims to create a safer space for everyone, both at the event and in the entire balboa and swing dance community. We are part of a wonderful community of people who connect through a shared love of swing music and dance. However, we recognize that these social dances exist within broader societal contexts and that issue of power, privilege, and oppression also exist within our community.

We Welcome You

Great Lakes Balboa Escape is open to everyone regardless of sex, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, physical appearance, ability, age or any other aspect of identity.

Be Respectful

We ask that you show respect to every member of the community and visitors, no matter their skill level or involvement in the community.

We Care

We understand that you may offend someone unintentionally, but if we hear about abusive, aggressive, or violent behaviors, or unwanted contact or unwanted acts of a sexual nature, we will ask you to leave the event without refund. You are responsible for your behavior.

Ask Others to Dance

Leads can be identified by solid wristbands and follows have patterned wristbands. If a person has two wristbands, they are able to lead and follow. You are welcome to ask anyone to dance with you in a kind and respectful manner.

Lifts and Drops are not Casual!

Aerials and drops (where a person takes the weight of another) are not for social dancing. They are permitted during jam circles and specific competitions. Make sure you have already practiced these moves with your partner and have their consent before executing them.

Communicate

During a dance, if you feel uncomfortable, talk to your partner (whether the discomfort is physical, psychological, sexual, or due to an injury). Do not hesitate to inform your dance partner of how to make the dance more comfortable for you.

Anyone Can Say No

You are allowed to stop a dance or refuse a dance with anyone. You may explain why, but you do not have to. If someone refuses a dance with you, try not to take it personally and make sure to respect the other person’s decision.

Floor Craft Matters

Make sure you have enough space to dance or dance small enough to fit the space you have. Both partners are responsible for their own safety. By paying attention to your surroundings, you can avoid injuring yourself and others. If you accidentally kick or collide with someone, apologize and make sure the other person is alright. The registration desk has a first aid kit if any injuries arise.

Be Tactful

Do not correct others dancing unless you were specifically asked for feedback or unless it is causing injury or discomfort. If you are in a situation where you are giving feedback, please make sure it is respectful and constructive.

Be Fresh

Please makes sure to take care of your personal hygiene during the weekend. It is recommended you take showers daily, wear scent-free deodorant, avoid strong perfumes, brush your teeth, and bring a change of clothing. Strong odors can be especially uncomfortable in balboa due to the close connection in this dance. There hygiene items in the hospitality baskets in the bathroom for your use.

Come Talk to Us

Disclosing an uncomfortable situation can be challenging. Know that you have the right to be heard, be believed, or have your privacy respected. If you need to speak to someone, please identify someone wearing one of these badges at the event.
