Balboa Shuffle

Description

This is an all levels competition. Competitors do not need  a full weekend pass to participate. This is a fun and friendly competition and those who have never competed before are encouraged to participate. Dancers will be paired randomly and will dance to music selected by a DJ.

$10 per person

Prelims Format

Contestants will be randomly paired with 3-4 partners and will dance in “all-skate” format to 1 minute 30 second songs chosen by the competition DJ. Leads and followers will be judged separately and chosen for finals based on call back format.

The competitors meeting will occur at 7:00pm on Saturday August 19 at the Plumber’s Hall (1340 W Washington Blvd). Prelims will occur at 8:00pm.

Finals Format

Contestants will be randomly paired with 3-4 partners and will dance in “all skate” format to 1 minute 30 second songs chosen by the competition DJ. Leads and followers will be judged separately and chosen for first, second, and third Prizes based on relative placement scoring.

Finalists will be announced  during the Saturday night dance. Finals will occur during the First Band Break (10:00-10:30pm). Finalists must check in with the Competition Coordinator (Jennifer Reed) at 10:00pm at the Registration Desk.

Judging Criteria

Contestants will be judged on:

Connection: As this is a social dance competition, judges will be look for your skill in listening to and reacting to a variety of partners. Competitors are expected to demonstrate teamwork with each partnership.

Musicality: Judges will assess both your general timing (ability to stay on rhythm) as well as your macro and micro musicality skills.

Technique: Contestants are assessed on their ability to cleanly execute Balboa and Bal-swing movements along with the technique and skills that are specifically required for lead or follow roles.

Creativity: Competitors are encouraged to add personality to the dance by adding their own innovative movement choices, structure, and footwork. However, the dance should still remain in the format of Balboa and Bal-swing.

Prizes

First, second, and third place winners receive a hand-crafted art glass trophy. In addition, winners will choose from passes to NW Bal Fest, Rocky Mountain Balboa Blowout, or Hot Rhythm Holiday.
